Fredy/Freddie confusion.

Stoehrst - Alonso can play better, I've seen him have much better games. He had a few giveaways in the center of the field and wasn't as sharp as he can be.
I rated Zakuani and Evans equally (7.5 for each). Zakuani was impressive, and looked like he'd improved a lot from last year. You're right, he did put in work on defense, something that had been a knock on him. But Evans was everywhere on the pitch, controlled the midfield as much as Alonso did, and got himself the goal. My MotM could really have been either of the two.

Re: Sigi dissatisfied with Sounders performance in First Kick victory

Stahl picked up his second yellow in the 40th minute for foul on Montero and not on Ljunberg.

Re: Sigi dissatisfied with Sounders performance in First Kick victory

Evans was your MoM? I'd have put Zakuani and/or Alonso well ahead of him. Alonso controlled the midfield, had good distribution and was always available for the ball. Zakuani meanwhile was not only the most dangerous man on the pitch but also tracked back well to break up several Philly passing moves, using his pace to burst from nowhere and win back possession. Evans certainly had a good game but I think he was overshadowed a bit by the aforementioned duo.

Agree with your Fucito assessment, I also think it was nerves. Flashes of scrappiness and real drive, like a less technical and skilled Carlos Tevez. Could be one to watch.

Re: Seven questions for the Seattle Sounders 2010 season

Jaqua scored more goals in total three goals, but he also played twice as much as he did in Houston. If you look at how much he played and how much he has scored his production is definitely down. Jaqua was inconsistent, probably scored most of those goals in June. So the question remains, can he be more productive, create chances for others as a target up front and finish from close in.

http://usasoccer.blogspot.com/...

Here are some stats, that I actually had a tough time finding. Sounders scored the fewest headers of the MLS. Also a bit of a knock against Jaqua given his size.

Don't get me wrong Jaqua can be quite good, and he always works hard, but working hard isn't enough.

We are the leader in goals off of corners amazingly. I sure don't remember many of them. Most of the corners that I see are not great chances for the team to score. But then again statistics seem to back up the opinion that the Sounders are one of the better teams at taking a corner in the MLS.

Re: Seven questions for the Seattle Sounders 2010 season

It's also worth noting that we didn't allow a goal off a corner all season either.

Re: Seven questions for the Seattle Sounders 2010 season

I agree with a few but there are a couple of points that are slightly off. Jaqua had a career high in goals last year. That's about the peak of what we will see from him, and I think 9 goals and 7 assists is pretty darn good for a #2 scoring option.
Corners and free kicks, I will give you free kicks since the Sounders didn't score a single goal directly or indirectly off of free kicks which is HORRIBLE for a team with two forwards who were one and two in the league in fouls against. They did however lead the league in goals off of corners.

Re: Seven questions for the Seattle Sounders 2010 season

The sounders weren't very effective on non-corner set pieces, but we were one of the best in the league on corners.

Re: A photographic journey through the Sounders first home playoff match

Freddie looks like he was untouchable with the ball at his feet. nice pictures

Re: Atrocious officiating cost the Sounders dearly

For MLS standards?!? That's the whole point - we need to challenge these current standards. MLS is suffering from a global lack of respect. We're starting to gain some interest at the world level, but if we don't continue to step it up across the league, we'll just continue down the same mediocre path we've been on. Seattle has shown that MLS can be a viable US sport. It's time for MLS leadership to step up and make this a respectable league.

Re: A photographic journey through the Sounders first home playoff match

Stay tuned while we work out the kinks please...

Re: Atrocious officiating cost the Sounders dearly

I agree, he should not have blown the whistle, but both the Houston D and Onstad held up after the whistle was blown, Jaqua would not have scored a goal had they held up. This is annoying, but not as bad as many of the calls made week in and week out in the MLS. Also, other than that call, the ref had a decent game (for MLS standards).

Re: How do we love the Sounders? Cheap shot?

Didn't Gregoire get a round of boos when she showed up at Qwest for the first game? May have been the echos from the Nickels boos.

If Sonics were still in town, the Sounders would still be a success and a major draw I am sure. My point is that the Seattle-region was ready for a team they could get behind.

Let's not forget what a bargain it is for pro sports, especially in down times.

Re: How do we love the Sounders? The success of the Sounders had nothing to do with the failed NBA Sonics skipping to Oklahoma.

Those fans in the stands, stand on their own ground, they are truly amazing, they are soccer fans which in Seattle has not seen on a large stage such as now. We have learned a lesson or two here from the Sounders FC world, thank you for that; we are the better for it.

Don’t sell yourself short, the NBA had nothing to do with this success here in Seattle.

"Sea Pimp"

Re: Sounders top United 2-1 to win Open Cup Final

Seattle has proven that with the right management, you can build a culture of success rather quickly.

No one. Could have been because of the two previous red cards.

Sounders next most fouled player has -- less fouls. It's a pretty obvious strategy.

There isn't another team with two players who have suffered more that 30 fouls in the league. Columbus will get there after their next match.

Re: MLS refs need to stop hack-a-Freddie/Fredy tactics

I think the physical "hack-a-Fred" tactics used to neutralize the SSFC's biggest threat and playmaker started with the LA game in May, and seems to have been adopted by a number of teams to disrupt Seattles more direct passing game where most of the moves run through the middle of the field and Ljungberg.

Add Ljungberg's very clear frustration with what's often rather questionable refereeing and I can see why one of the cleaner players in the league has the number of yellow cards he does.

Re: Who cares about the US Open Cup?

I would agree with you to a point. I thnk part of it is marketing and ticketing proceedures to. I've never lived in Euroupe but my understanding is when you buy a season ticket over there you are purchasing a "seasons pass". If you club schedules extra matches through friendlies or other competition than league matches the pass get's you in to the stadium.

Here you need to purchase a ticket to the extra game. The US Open cup games are always Tues/Weds. MOst season ticket holder faced with the option of having to lay out even more cash for something that they will have to rush to after work and be tired for a day or two at work afterwards normally pass.
